Disappointing Experience and Lack of Value
Our experience with this service was profoundly disappointing. We found that the quality was poor, and markups were added without delivering any corresponding value.
Key Issues
Overpriced with No Added Value: Significant markups were applied, but the service did not justify the cost. For instance, our flight tickets show a price in Kenyan shillings equivalent to approximately $470, yet we were billed $698. For such a premium, we expected expertise, local insights, and proactive support, but received none.
Unreliable: There was a lack of rigour in the details provided, and some committed items in the itinerary were left undelivered until we challenged them. We were initially assured of premium room , but when we requested specifics, we discovered that our rooms were merely superior, not premium.
Disorganised: We had to repeatedly follow up for basic details such as driver timings. To us, the experience felt like dealing with a basic middleman service, without any added value. Thankfully, the hotels we booked were excellent and ultimately salvaged our trip.
Detailed Experience
Nairobi: Last-minute changes to our plans resulted in missing most of the elephant centre, skipping a paid-for market stop, and being transported in substandard vehicles for both the airport pick-up and the day tour.
Masai Mara: The vehicle provided was in poor condition—dirty, with some doors that wouldn’t open, and felt generally neglected. The driver was rude and spent the entire six-hour drive and subsequent game drives on their phone. They attempted to skip the paid game drive and were hostile when we insisted on following our itinerary. The day began with no clear plan, and when questioned, the driver was extremely discourteous. Later, they informed us that the paid for village tour could not be accommodated, as we supposedly needed to leave at 7 a.m. to reach the restaurant for lunch by 2 p.m.—none of which was previously communicated. We had to insist (and offer additional payment) for a different driver for the return journey to address these issues. To give them their due, Splendid organised an alternative.
Mombasa: Although we paid for a late checkout, the hotel was never informed. Transfers required constant chasing for details.
Refund and Transparency
We received a small refund for undelivered items, but there was no transparency regarding what these items were. The refund did not compensate for the poor experience. What was most disappointing was the lack of transparency—for example, skipping parts of the itinerary and claiming it was for our safety, yet not communicating this at the time of booking, Or late checkout not being arranged despite charging - with the explanation that they do this only on the last day when flight details are known. However, by then, the hotel had already allocated rooms – so even had they wanted to extend, it would have been impossible. Note - this late check out charge was refunded, on our demand.
Our recommendation based on conversations with other guests and travellers, is that you skip this service as you will receive better value, service, and advice by booking directly with hotels and camps.

Posted on Sep 1, 2025Dear Aditya,
Thank you for choosing Splendid Vacations Africa to arrange your recent trip, and thank you for the detailed feedback. Allow us to shed more light on the feedback as follows;
Overpricing of the flights: We booked a domestic flight with Kenya Airways in economy class as requested. Flight rates continue to fluctuate daily, depending on demand and supply, driven by factors such as seasonality, holidays, fuel costs, airline competition, economic conditions, special events, and airline operational costs. The rates quoted were based on the date of quotation, and we booked the flights on the exact dates specified in the booking confirmation. However, the in-flight services offered by the airlines are beyond our control.
Unreliable: During the planning and booking of your safari, the assigned tour consultant, who was your primary contact, clearly stated that the rooms booked at the Baobab Beach Resort were superior rooms, an upgrade from the standard rooms. This was clearly indicated on the price breakdown, and the room allocated for your stay in Baobab Beach Resort was the superior room.
Disorganized: We specialize in private safaris, which allows us to accommodate clients' needs and special requests with flexibility. Each day, the driver guide provided a detailed briefing on the day's activities. Additionally, the driver's contact details and pick-up details were shared a day before you arrived in Kenya. Upon your arrival at the airport, you were welcomed by our airport representative, who provided a complimentary transfer to your hotel in Nairobi for your overnight stay.
Detailed experience: We completely understand the disappointment caused by the last-minute change to visit certain parts of Nairobi during the Nairobi City tour. The safety of our clients is our top priority. During your visit, some suggested locations were deemed unsafe, and the driver informed you of this. We also offered a full refund for the areas that weren't visited. On the first day of your safari to the Masai Mara, the itinerary clearly mentions an en-route game drive before check-in and a hot lunch at the hotel. Due to traffic and the fact that your hotel is situated outside the park, the driver suggested checking in first, having lunch, and then proceeding on the game drive at a relaxed pace. After a 6-hour drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara, you opted not to go to the hotel first and instead suggested doing a game drive until evening. The driver was happy to accommodate this change, even forgoing lunch to enhance your experience. The driver-guide kept in touch with our office to update us on the frequent changes to the itinerary. We have scheduled a meeting with the driver-guide to address the claims of being hostile and rude, which do not align with our company's values. We sincerely apologize for this and will take appropriate disciplinary actions.
Refund and transparency: On the day of check-in at the beach hotel, the office clearly communicated that the hotel check-out is typically booked two days before the guest's check-out date. This is a result of the constant changes in flight timings that we've experienced for quite a while with domestic airlines. The booked airline changed your flight timings from an evening flight to an early afternoon flight (we shared the communication from the airline in advance for your records), and it was pretty evident that we didn't have to reserve the late check-out in advance, as the fees could not be refunded. However, the late check-out fees were fully refunded in cash. The breakdown of items to be refunded was shared a day before you arrived in Nairobi from Diani Beach, and was offered in cash at your hotel in Nairobi.
We greatly value your feedback and are committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure that future guests have a memorable and fulfilling experience they deserve.
Thank you!

Ran into organizational problems
I am afraid our eight-day trip with Splendid Vacations wasn’t the five-star experience that the majority of other customers have had. Our driver, John, was very good, and we saw a lot of of animals; however, the company’s scheduling was often off-the-mark. For example, the planned 5 AM pick up time for our hot air balloon ride was changed to hours earlier, resulting in a significant lack of sleep, to say the least.
But the absolute worst situation occurred on our last day, where Splendid Vacations alerted me with less than 24-hours notice that our next day’s afternoon flight from Amboseli to Nairobi didn’t have enough passengers to warrant the trip (did no one realize this anytime sooner?!) I had to scramble to reorganize things, which caused us to lose out on our Masai village visit, and forced us to find something else to do in Nairobi following what was now an early morning flight (and we had already spent a full day touring Nairobi at the start of our trip).
We ended up touring Nairobi National Park in a land cruiser that had a pop-up roof which suddenly collapsed several times, barely missing my wife’s head at one point. The driver seemed inept at taking care of things, and also had a personality that made us feel like we were on our way to a funeral! Even though Splendid Vacations moved some things around, we ended up settling for lunch at the same place we had eaten a week earlier, and I’m sure I ended up taking a loss on a lot of of prepaid money as a result of all this.

Posted on Jul 12, 2025Thank you for your feedback! We're delighted to hear that you had a wonderful experience on your safari with John.
However, we would like to take this opportunity to clarify a few essential points regarding the above review:
Early Pick-Up for the Balloon Safari
In the Masai Mara region, there are several balloon safari companies, each with its own standard operating procedures that are beyond our control. The specific pick-up time for the balloon safari is determined by the location from which clients are flying in, the Masai Mara, and the hotel where you are staying. In our client's case, they were flying from the Mara North area, which necessitated an early morning pick-up. It's worth noting that the day before the balloon ride, the balloon company sent a team member to our client's hotel to conduct a comprehensive briefing. During this briefing, they discussed the pick-up times, safety precautions, and the amenities that would be provided during the balloon ride, ensuring that our clients were well-informed and comfortable.
Scheduling of the Domestic Flight
We had arranged a domestic flight for our clients from Amboseli to Nairobi's Wilson Airport on the final day of their trip, initially scheduled for 3:30 PM. Unfortunately, we received an email from the airline the day before, stating that they could not meet the required minimum of four passengers for this flight. As a result, they rescheduled it to an earlier morning flight departing Amboseli at 8:10 AM and arriving at Nairobi at 9:00 AM. We promptly notified our client of this change to ensure they were fully aware of the new flight schedule. However, we offered an alternative plan: forgoing the early morning flight and driving back to Nairobi instead. This option would have allowed our clients to enjoy additional time exploring Amboseli Park and visiting a Maasai Village without feeling rushed, given that their flight back home was scheduled late at night that day.
However, our clients opted to take the rescheduled flight. As a gesture of goodwill, we provided our clients with a complimentary tour of Nairobi National Park and lunch to avoid staying at the airport for a long time waiting for their flight back home.
In our ongoing efforts to enhance our clients' experiences, we have raised concerns with the domestic airlines regarding their policies. We are advocating for a revision of their operating procedures in scenarios where the number of passengers fails to meet the minimum requirements for flights.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we strive to improve our services.

Great at communicating, unhappy safari guide, poor planning and value for money ,
The communication from splendid was prompt and efficient. Vehicle was robust and well serviced. Driver/tour guide was grumpy and rude at times. Only on the last 1 hour drive of a four day tour decided to share his extensive knowledge. Company grossly misrepresented transit times between parks -2 hours was actually 5/6 hours. Hotels were fantastic.

Posted on May 4, 2024Hello,
We would like to address the above review as follows;
1. The client booked a 4-Day Tsavo West, Amboseli, and Tsavo East National Park Safari starting from Diani Beach. The booking process was smooth with her daughters, responsible for the safari planning. On Day 1 of the safari, the journey started well, from Diani Beach to Taita Hills and Saltlick Lodge, and we didn't have any complaints from the client. On Day 2, the Southern Region Safari Circuit, which is Tsavo Parks and Amboseli National Park, was experiencing a lot of rain that forced the driver to use the longer route to Amboseli, which is a drive of about 5 hours. The driver decided to ensure the client's safety as our usual route was already flooded because of the long rains, and the driver couldn't afford to risk it as clients' safety comes first. After arriving in Amboseli National Park, the clients checked in at the Ol Tukai Lodge, had a sumptuous lunch, and proceeded for an afternoon game drive. After the game drives, the client contacted us after dinner and informed us that she was not willing to proceed with the safari to Tsavo East National Park the following day because she had back pains. The client insisted on staying in Amboseli National Park on Day 3 rather than going to Tsavo East National Park at no extra cost as they were unwilling to add any cost.
2. Given that the client requested a last-minute change during the night, we asked for the client to wait until the following morning so that we could call the reservations department for the hotel in Tsavo East for the cancellations and credit the amount already paid. On Day 3, the hotel in Tsavo East confirmed that they were not in a position to refund or credit the amount already paid as this was a last-minute cancellation. As a company that focuses on ensuring service quality and client satisfaction to all our guests, we opted to pay for the client's extra night in Ol Tukai Lodge and the park fees for the same day out of pocket, totaling USD 700. The client was not charged for this. We again paid for their train tickets afresh from Emali to Mombasa as we had previously booked them from Voi to Mombasa, and the time frame for cancellation had already expired. After all the changes, the client shared an appreciation message with the company for re-booking the hotels and the train tickets.
3. Alex is one of our best driver guides, as per other reviews. On Day 3, when the client wanted to stay longer in Amboseli, our driver was in communication with the client advising of possible alternatives if Ol Tukai Lodge wouldn't confirm the availability of an extra night at the lodge and just in case the train is full from Emali to Mombasa (given that it was during the Easter Holidays) the client seemed not to agree with the driver of the alternatives provided. She was mad at the hotel reception; even the lodge could confirm she was shouting at the driver. All our driver guides are well-trained and disciplined. They have excellent driving experience, game viewing skills, and vast knowledge about wildlife, birdlife, plants, and authentic cultures of different communities in Kenya. On the same note, we are having a sit down with the driver to understand what transpired up to this situation.
Our company remains committed to offering excellent customer service and continually enhancing the customer experience.

Sweet arrangement from Splendid but mixed experience with the guide
We had an 11 day safari in Kenya, it’s such a wonderful adventure. Splendid did great in helping us with the arrangement and making sure everything connected smoothly. Our tour consultant James from the office was patient, reliable, and a pleasure to communicate with. I was a little nervous in the beginning paying the deposit when I’m not in the country yet, but the moment we landed in Kenya and were met by the James and the driver, we instantly felt relieved. The vehicle was in excellent condition—clean and tidy inside, spacious and comfortable, and fully equipped with charging ports and a fridge. Splendid even prepared special honeymoon decorations on the back of the car, which was a wonderful surprise for us. It attracted many smiles, friendly conversations, and congratulations along the way. It was clear that they had put a lot of thought and care into making the trip special for us. They had been quietly working behind the scenes to make everything run smoothly.
Although we had a very good experience with our tour consultant James, who was professional, reliable, and patient, our experience with our driver and guide James was mixed.
On the positive side, James is an experienced guide and very good at spotting animals. We weren’t focused on ticking off specific animals from a list—just encountering wildlife naturally was already a joy for us. But thanks to James’s excellent spotting skills, along with some good luck, we ended up seeing an amazing variety of animals and birds. James was also a good driver who always managed to get us arrive in time and drive smoothly even in the most bumpy conditions.
However, there are things we did not feel comfortable and behaviors that are unprofessional:
- About driving off-road: this is the dealbreaker experience that made us very unhappy. During our time in Masai Mara reserve, James asked for 200KSH to pay the rangers, I didn’t think too much and thought probably just rangers trying to make a living. But when it happened the second time in Mara Triangle it concerned me, and I did some serious research afterwards on driving off-road. When we were at the gate of Mara Triangle, James read the rules to us (not sure if its park requirement) and one of them was: cars are not allowed to drive off-road and not allowed to drive too close to the animals. In later conversations with different people, I learned that as a private conservancy Mara Triangle had strict rules and enforcements, bribing the rangers is unlikely to work here. We were seeing a cheetah along with a group of other cars and then saw the rangers coming to get the cars to move. James asked us for 1000KSH cash, saying everyone will have to pay. Instead of driving away like other cars, he drive towards the rangers and spoke Swahili that I don’t understand but the rangers seem serious and James also did not look happy. After the conversation James also drove us away. We did not see any official fine issued, receipt provided, or payment made directly to park authorities. Later, when we asked for the money back, James said that he dropped the money on grass through the window (when there’s a cheetah in close distance?) and other cars paid through m-pesa (how possible they know which ranger to pay?), if we don’t pay they will charge a huge fine, and said this is good for us… I just don’t feel he is being honest. If he is honest, then these people playing with the rules in the grey area is ridiculous. Neither is acceptable. It’s not about the money, but about honesty and integrity. If you’re a good guide we’re happy to pay you good tips, but trying to make money in a sneaky way is just not acceptable. Looking back, I felt guilting getting on the grass and getting close to the animals, if I was given the choice, I will for sure not do that. To us, integrity and honesty is more important than getting close to the animals. We hope guides could follow the rules, transparency and clarity could be ensured in such situations in the future.
- Being late: this is a huge red flag for a safari guide. James was on time for the first day when he came to meet and pick us up. But later, he was late most of the time and we rarely met at the supposed time. When he says we leave 7:30am , that probably mean 8am. There’re many times when we’re wrapping up with our breakfast close to our leaving time, we see James just coming for breakfast. I have to admit sometimes we’re behind a little bit, but we’re usually late within a 10min range. We pay for our guide’s time so the guide shouldn’t be the one to be late…
- My husband is a kind and gentle guy who is easygoing and always treats people nicely, but I feel our guide is taking advantage of it. James did not remember my husband’s name even till the last day (11 days and private car with just the two of us) and called the wrong name after multiple times of correction, it’s not a name in a different language but an easy English name, so he just did not want to pay attention.
- He was on the phone ALL THE TIME. Probably 50% of the times when we’re in the parks James is busy on the phone, we had to wait if we had questions about the animals. James is good at spotting animals but didn’t share much about animal knowledge, we had to keep asking questions. We kept asking so he started sharing more towards the end of the trip. He’s different from all the other guides we met during the safari (guides from hotels and parks during our visit), while others usually try to share as much as possible. This is probably just his style.
- Some times I feel confused if we’re the customer or our driver is the customer… most of the times we’re the ones waiting for him; he asks us to take pictures and asks us to send it to him. I feel I have these tasks assigned from him that I have to get done during my travel time. I’m happy with that, but there’s a line between being pushy and asking politely, and you know when the line is crossed, and if you ask for something from someone else, you’ll need to follow their timeline, instead of expecting them instantly.
- The binocular is by default in his hand, he not only asks for the binocular from us when watching animals (for him to take pictures from his phone) but also asks for our phone / camera for him to take pictures of the animals for us (and then asks us to send this this pics), I felt okay at first but uncomfortable with constantly doing so. It’s my experience, its only meaningful when the photos are taken from ourselves, so refused to do so later.
I hesitated for quite some time about whether to include these in the public review, but in the end I decided to do so. I believe people should be accountable for their actions, and sometimes only real consequences can lead to change. With all the aspects that we’re unsatisfied, we still left a good tip in the end—far more than the service level we were provided. We appreciate James' hard work and did not want him to feel that his efforts had gone unnoticed or unappreciated. However, the things that made us uncomfortable are something we hope the travel agency will take seriously.

Posted on Mar 13, 2026Dear Anika,
Thank you for your thoughtful review and for sharing your experience with us. We are delighted to hear that you had a wonderful adventure in Kenya and that James at the office made planning your honeymoon safari easy. We are also pleased that the special honeymoon decorations on the back of the car brought smiles, friendly conversations, and congratulations along the way.
However, we regret to learn that your experience with driver James was not good. We take your feedback seriously, as it does not reflect the standards of Splendid Vacations. Our company has strict policies that all our drivers must follow to ensure our guests have memorable safari experiences.
Allow me to address the key issues you raised:
Off-road Driving: Off-road driving is only permitted in private conservancies, not in parks and reserves. It is illegal to drive off-road, and James was aware of this, but he chose to break the law. Unfortunately, he requested cash to pay the rangers, which was unnecessary. We are more than willing to refund the amount you paid to the rangers for off-roading.
Lateness: Our policy clearly states that drivers should be ready to pick up clients ahead of schedule. For example, if the driver is supposed to pick up a guest at 8:00 AM, he should be ready by 7:30 AM to ensure the customer does not have to wait and the driver has enough time to confirm everything is set for the day. We are sorry to hear that James was consistently late and that you often had to wait for him.
To prevent this from happening to any guests in the future, we will meet with driver James and require him to submit a report addressing the issues raised, and he will face disciplinary action.
NOTE: We strive to provide our clients with memorable, trouble-free safari tours, but sometimes, despite our best efforts, things can go wrong. If you encounter any issues during your safari tour with Splendid Vacations Africa, please inform your tour planning consultant via email immediately. This allows us to address the problem on the spot, ensuring it does not spoil your safari experience.
In conclusion, we sincerely apologize for the mixed experience you had with James, and we greatly value your feedback. We are committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure that future guests have the memorable and fulfilling experience they deserve.
Thank you!
Best regards,
Splendid Vacations Africa.

Agency is reliable, but jeep and organization need improvement
We booked this agency through safaribookings.com based on the good reviews and quick communication with Brenda. Everything was easy to arrange and the cost was as expected, with the option to pay part of it in cash upon arrival in Nairobi.
Overall, the experience was positive, but for the price we expected better.
Jeep: ours (plate KBP 454K) was in very poor condition (broken seats, torn upholstery, seat belts not working, serious fuel tank problems). Refueling took over 40 minutes while other jeeps managed in 2. On top of this, we had to deal with multiple flat tires — even the two spare wheels were punctured, forcing us to repair them on the way and wasting a lot of time.
Guide/Driver: Dan did his best, but combining both roles is not ideal. He seemed inexperienced and lacked basic equipment (no binoculars). Driving and spotting animals at the same time is very difficult.
Transfers/Timing: travel times were much longer than promised (about +50%), which cut short our safari time. For example, we paid USD 400 but had only 3 hours inside the Masai Mara.
In short: reliable agency and smooth booking, but the vehicle quality and organization need serious improvement.

Posted on Aug 25, 2025Dear Saverio,
Thank you for choosing Splendid Vacations Africa to arrange your recent trip, and thank you for the detailed feedback. We appreciate that the booking process was smooth and the overall experience was positive.
However, we take full responsibility for the issues you had with the vehicle's condition with registration KBP 454 K and sincerely apologize for any inconveniences caused. The car in question will no longer be doing safaris, as our dream, as evidenced by other reviews, is to ensure our clients have a good 4 x 4 Safari Land Cruiser for a memorable safari experience.
Recently, we implemented a comprehensive program focused on repairing and servicing our fleet after every safari due to the challenging road conditions inside the parks to ensure that our clients have a seamless and enjoyable safari experience. This proactive step is aimed at ensuring that our future clients do not encounter similar problems. Rest assured, this will not happen again to any client.
We completely understand the importance of having a well-experienced driver guide while on the safari. To ensure the expertise of our drivers, we have invested heavily in ensuring that they regularly undergo professional training to maintain set standards in the tourism industry, be well-informed about the parks, and have in-depth knowledge about the flora and fauna. Unfortunately, Daniel, the driver guide assigned to your group, did not conduct himself appropriately, and we will take disciplinary actions to ensure this does not happen again.
We greatly value your feedback, and we're committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure that future guests will have a memorable and fulfilling experience they deserve.
Thank you!

Well-organized safari trip by a great company
*Booking*
We were looking for a safari company in Kenya for our honeymoon, and Splendid Vacations Africa offered us the most complete and detailed proposal. Maryann Lucky assisted us with great patience, helping us choose the best hotels and advising us on the most suitable itinerary.
Our route, starting from Nairobi:
- Amboseli (2 nights)
- Naivasha (1 night)
- Crescent Island → Nakuru (1 night)
- Masai Mara (3 nights)
*Payment*
The payment was made online in advance via Pesapal, with no extra fees, which was very convenient for us. Maryann promptly provided a receipt, and we didn’t need to present any documentation at the camps or lodges.
*Vehicle*
We chose the private 4x4 Land Cruiser option. The vehicle was in good condition and very comfortable throughout the safari. It was thoroughly cleaned twice during the trip, which we appreciated.
*Guide*
We requested a Spanish-speaking guide for our comfort, and that was arranged. Alex Masila, our assigned guide, had over 10 years of experience and navigated the parks with confidence. He also had good connections with other guides, which was helpful during wildlife sightings.
However, we felt that his attitude was rude at times. While we managed to see the Big Five and benefited from his expertise, he scheduled shorter safari times than other couples we met, which was a bit disappointing. This aspect kept our experience from being truly 5-star.

Well planned and thought out trip, but underestimated travel times
We had a great time booking through Splendid! Our guide Mwololo was attentive, experienced and kind, and really helped us relax and get into the safari spirit. We were able to cover 4 national parks and also complete a hike in just 6 days! An added bonus was seeing all of the big 5 which I cannot thank Mwololo and splendid enough for. The trip was designed perfectly to our budget and personalised requests, the accommodations were all clean and safe and comfortable, and everywhere we went the people were so friendly! We would definitely use splendid again. The only complaint we had was the driving times between parks was underestimated for pretty much all the drives, so we spent more time commuting than we had anticipated.

Very good experience
We have done this trip in family (4 adults) and we really appreciated all the communication and the flexibility and good advices of Splendid Vacation before the trip. We loved the car, the hotels and the itinerary. We saw lots of animals, notably thanks to our driver. It was an amazing trip, unforgettable !!
Nevertheless, on the first game drive day in Masai Mara, our driver was very late without any explanation. It happened that he could not pay the entrance park fees due to an IT problem. We had to pay $800 for us to go into Masai Mara. It is a shame that the agency could not handle it by itself as we had already paid them. But everything has been solved in the end and we have been reimboursed.
When I read the comments it seems that some drivers are very very nice and explain lots of things which was not especially the case for us. But still very good trip!!
I recommend the agency for their availability, flexibility, good value for money and good advices !! Thank you

Great service all round
We started booking our holiday over 6 months before travelling and decided to employ Splendid Vacations.
We wanted a 4 day Safari of the Masai Mara followed by a 4 day Safari of the Serengeti with a few days break in between. Sammy was brilliant from start to finish, working with us to nail down our exact requirements and the price breakdown was transparent with no hidden surprises.
All communication was clear and dealt with promptly.
The safaris were amazing, with the guides offering a huge range of knowledge. Julius was a stand out guide, he was outstanding in working hard to locate the best sightings, very courteous and helpful.
Overall, a really great experience.

Best of the best
Just ending the Kenya portion of our trip and very sad to say goodbye to Alex. What’s an amazing guide. Found ALL the animals and was always able to position for the best close up shots. We saw everything the Mara had to offer thanks to Alex. Many key moments and sightings we were the only vehicle there. Alex is always flexible and makes sure that you are getting the adventure you wanted. Vehicle was fantastic and comfortable and even included a refrigerated cooler with water. The pop up is a must. Everything else that Splendid did for us was well organized. We’ve been spoiled. We’ll miss you Alex, thank you!
