There is a wide variety of game, birds and flora to see. The climate is great, lots of sunshine.

Because the country is the cultivated Africa, it is not always easy to get really drowned into the bush atmosphere. Civilisation is often just a little to close

Kruger park doesn't have the same bush ibe as e.g. camping in Moremi or Chobe in Botswana because it is so easy to self drive. But it does have a lot of great wildlife (which can also be a challenge to see because of the thick scrub. I really loved combining the safari element with other wildlife activities such as diving (Mozambique), birding (e.g. penguins at Betty's bay and pelagic seabirds), whale watching (hermanus), sightseeing (Blyde river and Cape town) and shark diving around the cape.

South Africa has all the animals and they are obviously pretty easy to see.

There are many ways to see them from 5+ Star resorts to more run of the mill camps.

My concern is that it seems in South Africa that the animals are somewhat contained especially on the numerous private reserves. That certainly makes them easy to see but you feel a little like they are corraled for human viewing - still fun but not totally 'natural'.

We are planning a safari to Tanzania and Kenya - places where the animals roam pretty freely and we are the ones who are fenced in.

Where the Wild Things Still Are

My wife and I had an excellent safari experience, with knowledgable guides, nice accomodations, and good food. We will never forget the experience of being in the bush and seeing all the creatures we have dreamed of. Sadly, we fear that wildlife is in danger of disappearing and hope that all steps will be taken to preserve it.

Diverse unpredictable wildlife sightings and action in 10 game drives at 3 different lodges

We were blessed with sightings of the major big cats: male and female lions and cubs (in various activities: a mating couple, young cubs suckling mommy lioness, 3 young male lions feeding on carcass, 2 lionesses face off a rhino family; a male and female lioness staking and chasing a warthog); cheetahs (brothers and within family) in Phinda park reserve; leopards (and even 1 one that prowled at Kirkman Kamp where we stayed).
Also saw several white rhinos, hyenas, genet, dwarf mangoose, besides lots of zebras, giraffes, elephants, wildebeest.
Weather was pleasant: dry and cold in mornings.
Food and accommodation was excellent, with good variety and quantity of food and very comfortable bedding and bathrooms.
Rangers and drivers knew their stuff and got us key cat activities and also close to the action.

SOUTH AFRICA

Recently went to South Africa for a week.

Apart from the bad roads, worn down farms/buildings next to the road, rubbish everywhere, just like in Namibia, in some towns, and the fact that we were almost hijacked in Kimberly, I was pleasantly surprised!

We got great and friendly service from everyone right from the start, good food and drinks, exept from one place, best/affordable accommodation, clean malls, clean bathrooms, the weather was perfect and from the animals that we could see was a nice experience!

We visited a total of plus minus 6 towns. Every town is different. Every landscape is different.

disappointed not to see a pride of lions during one and a half days of game drives in Kruger

Five stars to Cape Town. Durban and Johannesburg are disappointing. I booked our safari on this website. It was definitely a memorable life time experience. I was surprised to see that the CEO of timeline travel came to take us from the airport being our driver guide. He came driving a Toyota Avanza which was not enough to accommodate the five of us with our five bags, car seat and a pram in addition to the driver, so we were squeezed during the five hour drive from Johannesburg Airport to Hazyview and also on the way back from Hazyview to Johannesburg airport. The accommodation was good in Kruger Park Lodge in general. The 3 bedroom chalet was very nice but had only one shower and no air conditioning in the main living room although the weather was hot. Dinner in the lodge was very good. The visit to the panorama route was really beautiful through Graskop, God's Window, Bourk's Potholes and the three rondavels (Blyde River Canyon). The lunch in the Potholes was pathetic and there
Read more definitely should be something else other than the one and only ugly busy restaurant. The one and a half days of game drives was a fantastic experience for a first timer. Yet I was disappointed not to properly see the big five. We saw enough Rhinos, Buffalo and Elephants but we only saw one Leopard hanging on a tree from a distance and only one sleeping lioness turning its back on us from a distance.
